FASHION BRANDS THAT ARE SUPPORTING THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT

AND
THE BLACK-OWNED BRANDS YOU SHOULD SUPPORT!

FLASHBACK: Brands that have donated to Black Lives Matter Organizations

Today we are going to take a little trip down memory lane and take a look back at some of the amazing beauty and fashion brands that have donated to the Black Lives Matter movement.

This past summer, consumers and society at large called out for more equality, diversity and inclusion and some of the industries that were called out were fashion and beauty powerhouses. A movement triggered by the senseless killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and other acts of violence by police and white supremacists, that launched a nation -wide black lives matter protest. Many brands and influential people turned to social media to show their support, and expressed their solidarity and have made a pledge to join the fight for equality.

To show their dedication to promoting equality, many brands started promising that they would have a more diverse pool of staff, and that they would improve their corporate culture and policies to make sure that minority employees were treated fairly and given the opportunity to have influence and hold leadership roles in their companies. However, many brands remained silenced so Uoma Beauty founder Sharon Chuter was inspired to launch “Pull Up for Change”, an initiative demanding that companies be more transparent about the demographic breakdown of their employees. For many, these results revealed just how far fashion and beauty brands still have to go.

Beyond that, many companies have also pledged money to various Black Lives Matter movements. Below, we have listed a few:

  1. Fabletics donated $50,000 to the ACLU in its fight for racial injustice.
  2. Lululemon donated $100,000 to the Minnesota Freedom Fund
  3. Anastasia Beverly Hills pledged a total of 1 million dollars to various anti-racist initiatives
  4. H&M will be dispersing a donation of $500,000 to several anti-racism organizations
  5. Sunday Riley donated $50,000 to the NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund.
  6. Hourglass donated $100,000 across various organizations that are fighting for equality.
  7. Elf Cosmetics donated $25,000 to Color of Change
  8. Aritzia donated $100,000 to Black Lives Matter and the NAACP.
  9. Savage X Fenty committed to donating to The Bail Project and the Black Lives Matter Coalition of Greater New York.
  10. Spanx donated a total of $200,000 to organizations fighting for the Black Lives Matter movement in Atlanta and across the nation.

Since then, many other brands have made contributions like Nike, Jordan brand, Pretty Little Thing, and many more. But as we continue to hold brands accountable, we have to take a second to look at how we, as a community, can do our part as well.

What can we do?

These fashion and beauty powerhouses have chosen to support the movement by donating money to the Black Lives Matter organizations.

So what can we, the individuals, do to help the black community in fashion?

In addition to educating ourselves, encouraging conversations with family, friends and colleagues and donating to organizations fighting against racial injustice, another helpful and sustainable way to support is to shop from Black-Owned Businesses.

Many fashion brands have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic and still remain closed.

According to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Black-Owned Businesses have struggled more than white competitors to receive the federal aid program due to the geography and weaker ties to banks. Research at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a report by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that 41% of Black-Owned Businesses have been shuttered by COVID-19, compared to just 17% of White-Owned Businesses.

We have seen a lot of Black-Owed Business trying very hard to survive. And we would like to help by introducing those amazing Black-Owned Fashion Brands out there.

Since our headquarter is located in NY and most of our clients and members are in NY, we have made a list of New York-based Black-Owned Businesses as a starter.

We would love to learn more about amazing brands in different cities and countries!
We will continue to update and add more national and non-New York local businesses moving forward.

So please share with us the Black-Owned Businesses in your area or any Black-Owned Businesses you know!
